Medicare FOr all
We must implement Medicare for All because health care is a right, not a privilege. Our district has 83,000 people without health insurance--that's unacceptable. We must stop Republican plans to kick more people off of health care, then go on offense to get Medicare for All passed. Learn about how Derrick is fighting for your right to health care.
fixing The rigged economy
We need an economy that works for everyone and not just the people at the top. We must protect our economic and political liberty, bust up monopolies and “too big to fail” firms, and get big money out of politics. That means overturning Citizens United, bringing back trust-busting, and standing with organized labor.
Fighting Climate change
Climate change is real. We should implement a carbon fee and dividend system to spur innovation and slow emissions, but that's not enough. We need a Marshall-Plan-style program to electrify our energy system using solar and wind power, strong efficiency standards, and regulations to cram down carbon emissions in time to avoid catastrophic climate change. Read Derrick's plan to lay the foundation for a net-zero carbon economy by 2035.
Net Neutrality is the basic idea that Internet service providers like Comcast and Verizon should be prohibited from blocking, slowing down, or speeding up apps, content, or websites. Net Neutrality is essential to an open, democratic Internet. The FCC recently voted to gut Net Neutrality in the face of deep public opposition, but we don't have to take it. Sign our petition to save Net Neutrality.
National Jobs Guarantee
When millions of people are unemployed, underemployed, or employed in jobs without living wages, we all suffer. College for All will be essential to ensuring that people can acquire new skills and education, but it won't be enough on its own, especially since we will face a disruption from automation more forceful than the Industrial Revolution. To be prepared for massive job losses and churn in the labor force, we need a national jobs guarantee.
End the Era of Student Debt
The $1.4 trillion in student debt carried by U.S. borrowers represents a deep crisis in economic freedom. Derrick supports eliminating it - totally - by taking the approach proposed by Stephanie Kelton, Scott Fulwiler, Catherine Ruetschlin, and Marshall Steinbaum: "The federal government would write off the debt for which it itself is the creditor (the majority of outstanding student loans), and it would assume payments on behalf of borrowers for those loans that are held by private lenders. The population’s student loan balance would be reduced to zero."
Derrick also supports Sen. Bernie Sanders' College for All proposal, making tuition free at public colleges and universities.
Together, these proposals would end the era of student debt.
combating racism and fighting for immigration justice
Stop the assault on communities of color, which includes ending mass incarceration, the war on drugs, and mass deportation. Criminal justice reform and the legalization of marijuana are critical to restoring real justice to our communities.
We must stand with Dreamers, pass a clean Dream Act, create a real path to citizenship as part of comprehensive immigration reform, and stop Trump's racist border wall.
Stop Senseless Gun Violence
Gun violence is an epidemic in this country. Derrick supports universal background checks, limiting magazine sizes, banning assault weapons like the AR-15, and making straw transactions into a serious federal offense with serious consequences. He would also require that anyone convicted of domestic violence surrender their firearms. Derrick will also undertake vigorous oversight of our federal departments to make sure our background check system includes the relevant information gathered by other agencies, so that we never see another shooting like Sutherland Springs.
American women should know that they will receive equal pay on the job, as well as paid maternity leave should they choose to have a child. They should also be afforded the respect of having control of their own bodies, and their reproductive rights should be safe from right wing attacks on their freedom.
Living wage now
Raise the minimum wage to $15/hour so people who work full-time can afford a life with dignity. If you work 40 hours a week then you should not live in poverty. We need to fight for a living wage for all. Fight for 15!
COLLEGE FOR ALL
Make public colleges and universities free to attend and fund quality K-12 education where local schools, not standardized testing companies, shape our children’s destinies.
We must stand with our LGBTQIA neighbors against the right-wing attack on their rights and relationships. Marriage equality and respect in the workplace are non-negotiable.
